How To Get Your Driver License In New York Without Previous Driver Education

You can upgrade your senior driver’s license to unrestricted at 17 years of age if you choose to take the drivers ed course rather than just a pre-licensing class. New York is one of the few states that requires all drivers to take some sort of education. The approved driver’s education course must include 24 hours in the classroom and 24 hours in the car, with 6 hours behind the wheel and 18 hours of observation. Some states also require a certain amount of time in a classroom for driver’s education courses. Even if these classes are not required, they will teach you skills to reduce your chances of getting a traffic ticket or getting into an accident. If your license has been expired for quite some time, you may be ineligible for transferring your license from one state to another. Instead, you may be required to apply for a brand new license, which often involves starting from scratch with a written exam, vision exam, and driving test.
