Apple introduces new iPhone security mode to protect against stolen passcodes

MacRumors has obtained purported renders of at least three design candidates that Apple is developing for the vanilla iPhone 16 models. Two of them look virtually identical to the iPhone 15, while the third — and braver — option brings back the iPhone X’s camera module look. If your phone is unresponsive or failing, you can try entering recovery mode, which should let you update or restore your phone. However, if you can’t get past the Apple logo or if your phone just won’t respond, there is another option.

You will not find something that performs better under $500, even if its lone camera loses some luster when compared against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy A54 and the Google Pixel 7a. If the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s price is too much, try the iPhone 15 Pro instead. It’s got the mostly the same features as the Max, with a smaller 6.1-inch display — but it also costs $200 less than its 6.7-inch counterpart. It may not generate the excitement of other recent models, but the $799 iPhone is at a price most of us can afford.

Typing messages, or anything else, is updated so you can turn off predictions inline, although personally I love that feature. Also on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max only, there’s a new shortcut for the Action button, which replaced the Mute/Ring slider of previous iPhones. You can now set it to Translate, making it easy to have conversations in foreign languages without even having to open an app. Apple will introduce a new security mode for iPhones that can protect users when thieves or other attackers learn their private passcode.

This was a surprising move by Apple, given the role of inflation in 2023’s supply chain. Another way to reset your iPhone is to do what Apple officially calls a “force restart.” Once again, no important data will be lost. A force restart is recommended when your iPhone is completely unresponsive. For example, your iPhone screen turns black (despite it being powered on), the screen freezes, or your iPhone encounters an issue during startup. The exact way to perform a force restart depends on which iPhone model you own. Note that we’re considering the base models of the iPhone for each generation, and these prices assume you also signed up for a contract at the time of purchase. We’re also looking at the price of the iPhones in the USA for the purpose of comparison, as the retail price of the handset can vary in different parts of the world.

We don’t yet know whether Apple will extend its device management protections so  that Stolen Device Protection can be enabled remotely using MDM solutions. Recent reports say criminals have peered over a user’s shoulder while the victim enters their password before seizing the device.

That’s just one of a multitude of ways criminals will attempt to seize or guess a user’s passcode. The chunky bezels of the classic iPhone design also look incredibly dated. The notch is gone, and now in its place, the Dynamic Island that it borrows from the iPhone 14 Pro series. The iPhone 15 features an A16 Bionic chipset instead of the newer A17 Pro. But at least the iPhone 15’s version of the A16 features it the extra GPU muscle to boost it over the iPhone 14. The new Action button replaces the mute switch and can be programmed for a number of functions — including acting as the mute switch. Its most notable new addition is its improved telephoto camera range, which now extends to 5x zoom, the longest in an iPhone to date. But if you don’t care for its large size and even larger starting price, you’ve got plenty of other options when it comes to Apple’s handsets.

When shopping for an iPhone, take stock of the features and capabilities that matter most to you. If battery life is especially important, seek out a larger iPhone, as they tend to have bigger batteries to match their screen size. What’s more, because iOS is known to be generally efficient in terms of energy consumption, even the smaller models tend to last longer than average on a charge. The iPhone 14 Plus is the best iPhone for people who prefer a larger display but don’t want to pay big bucks for one of the best big phones. For $200 less than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Plus gives you an expansive 6.7-inch OLED screen, whether you want to watch movies and shows on the go or you just want a bigger viewfinder for your photos. And the photos look amazing from the improved cameras on the iPhone 14 Plus, thanks to a bigger main sensor and Apple’s Photonic Engine for better pics in low light. The iPhone 15 Plus is the best iPhone for people who prefer a larger display but don’t want to pay big bucks for one of the best big phones.

There are many other enhancements that make this a better handset–but it has a much higher price. It is also possible to buy cheaper iPhones from Apple’s Refurbished Store.
